14 февраля 1943 года от гитлеровских оккупантов и их приспешников был освобожден Ростов-на-Дону. Освобожден повторно, поскольку в 1941 г. красноармейцы и ополченцы уже освобождали Ростов, но в тот, первый раз, не смогли его удержать перед натиском превосходящих сил противника. В июле 1942 г. гитлеровские войска, повернувшие на Кубань и Кавказ, взяли южную столицу. На протяжении полугода Ростов-на-Дону оставался в руках оккупантов.
Для многих ростовчан эти месяцы стали настоящим адом. 53 тысячи ростовчан было угнано в рабство в Германию. Примерно сорока тысячам жителей Ростова-на-Дону так и не удалось встретить освободителей — они погибли от рук оккупантов. В Змиевской балке гитлеровцами были уничтожены не менее 27 тысяч ростовчан — коммунистов, комсомольцев, людей еврейской национальности, пленных советских военнослужащих.

Долгожданное повторное освобождение Ростова-на-Дону 14 февраля 1943 года стало первой победой советских воинов по выбиванию гитлеровцев из города такого уровня.
В этот день мы вспоминаем не только тех бойцов, которые непосредственно зимой 1943 года разгромили фашистов и отбросили их к границам Ростовской области, но и ростовчан, сражавшихся на других фронтах Великой Отечественной, героев, защищавших подступы к Ростову летом 1942 года и приближавших Победу даже ценой своей жизни.
Начиная с середины 1960-х годов, улицы Ростова-на-Дону получают новые названия в честь героев Великой Отечественной войны. В 2000-х годах на них устанавливают новые информационные стенды с краткими текстами об их подвигах, или обновляют мемориальные доски.
Железнодорожный район Ростова-на-Дону (бывшая станица Гниловская) дважды находился на острие атаки. И не случайно здесь много улиц, названных в честь героев.

Улица, где находится библиотека имени М.А. Шолохова, носит имя Владимира Кулагина.
Летчик Владимир Тарасович Кулагин принимал активное участие в отражении налетов фашистской авиации на железнодорожный узел Батайск, Ростов-на-Дону и Кулешовку. Всего за два дня он совершил два тарана, из обоих вышел живым и сумел посадить свой самолет.
Как пишет Сергей Черноусов в книге «В небе Донском», во время прорыва танковой группировки в Ростов лейтенант Кулагин проявил особое мужество. Из штаба его отделению сообщили, что в этот участок прорвался бомбардировщик «Хенкель-111». Поступил приказ немедленно уничтожить.
И вот, набрав высоту, два истребителя «ЯК» направились в район, где предположительно мог быть тот самый бомбардировщик. С левой стороны от самолетов виднелся Ростов-на-Дону, справа – крыши домов Батайска. Наконец, вражеский бомбардировщик обнаружили. Атаковать его в лоб не представлялось возможным, поскольку он шел со снижением и наращивая скорость. Поэтому Владимир Кулагин принял решение сосредоточить огонь на хвостовом стрелке. В результате атаки ему удалось это сделать – пулемет замолчал. И тут закончился боезапас…
Владимир принял решение идти на таран и «рубить хвост». Постепенно подбираясь к хвосту бомбардировщика, он прочно уперся ногами в пол. Когда до самолета осталось метров тридцать, струя воздуха от винтов отбросила «ЯК» в сторону, пришлось начинать заново. В итоге летчику удалось подобраться к «Хенкелю», даже получилось на секунду увидеть немецкого пилота, после чего он направил самолет во вражескую машину.
Треск и скрежет металла был ужасным. Отведя самолет в сторону, Владимир Кулагин не смог увидеть, как разрубленный им бомбардировщик взорвался в воздухе от груза, который и сдетонировал.
Через пару часов после успешной посадки на аэродроме появились некие граждане. Они принесли с собой спаренный пулемет со сбитого самолета и захотели увидеть того пилота, который на их глазах подбил немецкую машину. Как оказалось, это были пассажиры пригородного поезда. Они вручили найденный трофей лейтенанту Владимиру Кулагину и передали сердечную благодарность от жителей Батайска.
Этот таран летчик-герой совершил 28 ноября 1941 года, а уже на следующий же день он снова прикрывал наземные войска. В этот раз он встретился с бомбардировщиком «Юнкерс-88», который лейтенант настиг в небе над Койсугом. После трех атак самолет удалось подбить, но он продолжал лететь. Тогда Кулагин ударил его винтом своего «ЯКа» по крылу. Это привело к тому, что тот смог пролететь всего несколько километров, после чего рухнул недалеко от линии фронта. Однако бомбы все-таки успел сбросить…
Владимир Кулагин родился 31 июля 1913 года в Пензенской области. Он погиб 19 мая 1942 года, его похоронили в Купянске Харьковской области. Награжден орденами Ленина и Красного Знамени, представлялся к званию Героя Советского Союза.
В 1965 году в Ростове-на-Дону появилась улица Кулагина.
Ещё одна улица, вернее, переулок связана с легендарным героем войны и носит имя Югова. На самом деле Югова звали Михаил Михайлович Трифонов, а если еще точнее — Мина Миниевич Трифаниди. По национальности он был приазовским греком — уроженцем села Константинополь Азовской губернии. 16 октября 1942 г. Трифонов, использовавший псевдоним «Югов», прибыл в оккупированный немцами Ростов для создания здесь подпольной организации. Так началась история партизанского отряда им. Сталина, после освобождения Ростова трансформировавшегося в разведывательное подразделение.
Ко времени прибытия Трифонова-Югова в Ростов здесь уже действовала небольшая партизанская группа «Трамвайщик». С 9 сентября 1942 г. группа печатала и распространяла среди населения города листовки с призывами не поддаваться панике и не сотрудничать с оккупационными властями. Трифонов, который теперь стал Юговым, приступил к формированию собственного партизанского отряда. В его задачи входили сбор разведывательных данных, агитационная работа среди населения и советских военнопленных, распространение листовок. К Югову присоединилось несколько местных жителей и бойцы советских подразделений, которым после разгрома своих частей удалось пробраться в тыл к немцам.
Численность отряда Югова достигла 122 человек. Отряд разделялся на группы, отвечавшие за печать листовок, их распространение, агитационную работу среди советских военнопленных и военнослужащих армий противника, за сбор разведывательных данных. Группа машинисток отряда в составе Алевтины Сердюк, Веры Краевой и Антонины Савельевой печатала листовки с воззваниями и материалами Совинформбюро. Всего было напечатано 4000 листовок. Врачи Д.П. Ломова и Б.Н. Чусарев, продолжая работать в медицинских учреждениях Ростова, не только оказывали помощь подпольщикам, но и сумели спасти от отправки в Германию, в рабство к нацистам, более пятисот жителей Ростова-на-Дону. Партизаны занимались организацией передач в тюрьму и места содержания военнопленных.
Начал отряд и диверсионные действия против оккупационных войск. Командовал диверсионной группой Владимир Кукуюк — брат начальника штаба отряда Сергея Кукуюка, а входили в группу еще один брат Яков Кукуюк, а также Федор Сухоруков, Нестор Николаев, Константин Шимарин и Анатолий Ермаков. Среди добрых дел этих партизан — нападение на автоколонну вермахта с боеприпасами на территории Северного поселка Ростова. Диверсантам удалось уничтожить охрану автоколонны и взорвать три машины с боеприпасами. Еще одна боевая вылазка — уничтожение пяти гитлеровских патрулей, сопровождавшееся изъятием трофейного оружия в пользу партизанского отряда.
К январю 1943 г. ростовскими подпольщиками было уничтожено более 200 гитлеровских солдат и офицеров. Большой урон подпольщики нанесли материально-технической базе вермахта — уничтожили 24 автомобиля, миномет, артиллерийское орудие, сожгли 24 тонны горючего. Арсенал партизанского отряда пополнялся также за счет нападений на немецкие и союзные войска — подпольщики смогли овладеть двумя пулеметами, сотней винтовок и автоматов и 25 тысячами патронов. Был взорван фильтр водоочистки пивзавода, сожжен электромотор, с помощью которого подавалась вода в расположение немецких частей.
Перед освобождением Ростова советскими войсками гитлеровцы собирались взорвать важнейшие объекты городской инфраструктуры, в том числе несколько корпусов завода «Ростсельмаш» — гиганта сельскохозяйственного машиностроения, а также хлебозавод и бумажную фабрику. Именно партизанам Югова удалось спасти эти объекты от неминуемого разрушения. На ростовском хлебозаводе, функционирующем вплоть до настоящего времени, кое-где до сих пор заметны следы от пуль семидесятилетней давности.
Когда советские войска приблизились к Ростову и начались бои за город, Югов и его люди вступили в открытое противостояние с гитлеровцами. Отряд, бойцы которого преимущественно размещались в частных домах на территории восточной окраины города — в Берберовке (поселок Маяковского), на Сельмаше и в поселке Орджоникидзе, был разделен на три группы и начал уничтожение гитлеровцев на территории поселков Сельмаш и Маяковского. В ночь на 14 февраля 1943 года партизаны — юговцы атаковали гитлеровцев, укрепившихся на Западном разъезде. В течение шести часов шел бой советских патриотов с гитлеровским войсковым подразделением. Окончился он победой партизан над регулярной частью верхмата. Было убито 93 немецких солдата и офицера, уничтожены склады с боеприпасами и три миномета.
За подвиги в немецком тылу Михаила Югова ждала звезда Героя. Но получить её он не успел. Талантливого командира с группой диверсантов снова отправили за линию фронта. Случилось непредвиденное: из-за чьей-то ошибки парашютисты свалились прямо на головы немцев. Четыре часа тринадцать десантников отбивались от полка фашистов. В живых не осталось никого.
